report for the first day of the 2017 bird season

Posted On: September 1, 2017 BY Mark Walters

As I am writing this report, I can hear the rain and the wind whipping it up outside.  It is a noise I am familiar with because it has not stopped raining since I left Cincinnati at 9:30am this morning.  We decided to call the D&H shoot today because of the forecast, but the boys from Shelbyville were not up for missing opening day.  They called me and said to meet them at 11am at a field outside of Shelbyville.  When I arrived at the hunting shack it was raining steady and everyone just hung out and told stories.  Around 2:30 we decided to hit the field in anticipation of the rain slowing down.  It never did slow down.

We got in the field and the rain pounded us.  The wind was strong and you could just see the sheets of rain continually pound the field.  Every once in a while the birds would fly and when they did it was fast action.  There were some really strong flights where you couldn’t reload fast enough.  We had steady shooting and then we called the shoot at around 5pm.     -Mark
